Dear Stargate Family:

Thank you to everyone who participated in our recent public meetings and community survey relative to curriculum standards alignment at the elementary building. We are excited to share the outcome of several years of consideration regarding structural changes at the elementary level. Following a period of research and investigation, teacher meetings, and a community Town Hall meeting, we have made the decision to create single grade-level classrooms across the K-5 building.

Why are we making this change?

Teachers will have the opportunity to instruct our students to mastery using grade level standards in Science and Social Studies, while still having access to needs-based groups for Literacy and Mathematics. Additionally, Specials teachers are excited to teach much smaller classes (17-19 students), rather than more than 30 students they have in their current classes. Our Learning Specialists will also have the chance to interact with students in Literacy and Mathematics across the whole school day, rather than morning hours only.

What does this mean for next year?

Today, teachers met in collaborative groups to establish homeroom placements for next year. Before the end of the school year, placements will be made public, and students will have the opportunity to meet their new homeroom teacher for the 2018-2019 school year during a Move-Up Day to be scheduled before the end of the school year. Teachers and administration worked today to develop classroom placements, and there were several factors that we took into consideration to create class lists. We looked for ways in which to have balanced, harmonious classes that will allow for social/emotional growth and academic learning. As a result, if this year a student had Teacher X for 3rd grade they may or may not have that teacher for 4th grade. We are working on a daily schedule, and will share it by the end of the year.
