There has been much discussion about our children and their online activity, also known as screen time. It seems like at least twice a year there is a new “challenge” or some type of app that isn’t appropriate for our young children. Trying to stay on top of the latest apps and online “challenges” can seem like an extra part-time job for any parent; myself included. There are steps we can take as parents to ensure our children engage in safe online activity.

Device Settings & Parental Controls

These can be a parent’s best friend. Most TVs have parental controls these days. It is a great way to limit, or at least control what your child is watching. You can also set controls on devices. A great example of this is turning off “suggested autoplay” on Youtube videos to stop your child from viewing content that they did not select.

The more you can talk about online use with your child, the better; and start while they are young. By starting conversations when the stakes are low, your child will be more willing to talk to you when serious problems may arise.

Set Rules and Boundaries

Many parents will have their child read and sign an online use contract. This is a great place to set the expectations and list out the consequences if any are needed. It is also important to be consistent and stick to the rules you both agreed to.

Internet Safety and Cyberbullying

It is important for students to understand that they may not truly know who they are interacting with online. Have conversations with your child that they must always be safe and never give out personal information. It is also important to address cyberbullying at an early age. I wish I could say that children are never mean to one another, but that isn’t always the case. Encourage your children to be nice to others and ask them how they made someone’s day better.

In closing, our children will make mistakes. Give them the opportunity to learn from them. This job called parenting is not easy and we often grow as much as our children do when they are faced with difficult situations.

Read Across America Read-A-Thon!!!

For the week of March 4-8, Stargate students will compete against each other in a read-a-thon in honor of Read Across America and Dr. Seuss' birthday. I encourage you to incorporate as many activities using Dr. Seuss as possible to make this really enjoyable for kids.

Our goal is to make this the least amount of work for classroom teachers as possible.

Here’s how it works:

Every student will get a piece of paper that will travel to and from school with them for that week. For every 10, 20, 30 minutes (see details below) that a child reads, he/she will receive one paper chain to place outside their homeroom classroom. This form is pretty simple; it requires students to circle the amount of time read and a parent to sign off on it.

  • Kindergarten and first grade will compete against each other. For every 10 minutes read, students will earn one chain link.

  • Second and third graders will compete against each other. For every 20 minutes read, students will earn one chain link.

  • Fourth and fifth graders will compete against each other. For every 30 minutes read, students will earn one chain link.

At the end of the week, the homeroom class from each grouping with the most chains will win a prize and there will be a grand prize for the overall winner for the entire school. The prizes will be:

  • pizza party for the homeroom with the most chains from kindergarten and first grade

  • pizza party for the homeroom with the most chains from second and third grade

  • pizza party for the homeroom with the most chains from fourth and fifth grade

** The overall winner for the school will win a pizza AND an ice cream sundae party!
