The Power of One: A Bullying-proofing Performance February 15th

1st show - 1:00 PM 3-5

2nd show - 1:50 PM K-2

The Power of One is a series of skits presented by actors who use boxes, colours, and masks to vividly portray what bullying is, what can be done about it, and how every child has the power of one, the power to report and deal with bullying when they see it.

The Power of One:

  • Explains the roles in bullying: Bully, Target, Bystander, and Upstander

  • Shows vivid examples of different types of bullying: Physical, Verbal, Exclusion, and Cyber bullying

  • Alerts children that Targets need help and shows them how to be Upstanders rather than Bystanders

  • Provides solutions to bullying including reporting, intervening, and assisting the Target

  • Emphasizes the need for individuals to take action to make their community a safer, better place

  • Refers children to parents, adults, and teachers for further assistance and instruction

Conferences

Parent-teacher conferences are right around the corner. They are scheduled for February 7th through the 9th. Please refer to your student’s homeroom teacher for additional information. We are looking forward to seeing you then.

Chocolate and Candy and Heart....OH MY!!!!!!  Sales will begin on Thursday, February 1st and will run through February 13th.

Back by popular demand, the elementary school STUCO will be selling special Valentines again this year! Confectionery love can be purchased for and given to anybody.  Students may choose to take their candy with them or leave it, with a special note, for student council representatives to deliver to classrooms on Valentine's Day.

Since this day is all about love and kindness, STUCO will be donating 50% of all proceeds to St. Jude's Hospital to help children with cancer and their families.  They are also donating $100.00 to Nothing but Nets, which sends malaria preventing mosquito nets to Africa.  With the rest of the earnings, STUCO will spend 25% on something for the school and keep 25% in their fund for future use.

Our STUCO representatives will be selling sugary goodness from 7:30 am to 7:50 am and from 3:00 pm - 3:30 pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesday mornings, Thursdays and Fridays.  On Wednesday afternoons, sales will be from 1:30 pm - 2:00 pm.

come and show everyone you care about a little love and help support some wonderful causes in the process.  Thank you all so much for supporting our student council and our school!

Influenza Update from Tri-County Health

Influenza-like illness (ILI) is a fever >100.4 and a new cough and/or sore throat.  Tri-County Health Department recommends:

  • Sending children and staff with Influenza-like illness (ILI) home until fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication;

  • Increasing hand washing;

  • Teaching everyone to cough into their arm, not their hands;

  • Increasing cleaning and sanitizing of high touch surfaces.

  • Encouraging flu vaccine for children and staff

We ask that you tell your families to  follow the same control measures at home.  Should a child become ill with influenza like illness, they should be kept home from school to prevent any further spread.  They should seek medical care for treatment and testing; it is not too late to vaccinate.

Watch your student population (and teachers) for symptoms of fever, cough, congestion, body aches, and sore throat, and if there is illness, please send them home to help stop further spread of illness.

CMAS Testing Dates

As the standardized testing dates near, I thought it would be helpful for families to have the tentative schedule especially since it starts before Spring Break. Please remember that the CMAS Testing in the Elementary building is for 3rd through 5th grade students. All the students will have three sessions for both ELA (English Language) and Math. The 5th grade students will also have three sessions of Science.

A more detailed schedule will be sent out in the next few weeks. The information will also include how you can best support your child as they prepare for the assessments.

Accountability Committee Update
The updated KPIs for quarter-ending December 31, 2017 are available on the school website:  http://charter.stargateschool.org/connect/committee-announcements.  Changes include updated financial KPIs and state standardized testing KPIs. (While we have known the 2016 state testing results for several months, our KPI timing correlates with the CDE’s School Performance Framework report, which is usually released each December.)  If you have any questions, please contact accountability@stargateschool.org.
