C Notes January 3, 2017

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday break and was recharge the batteries and get ready for the second half of the 2016-2017 school year! I was very thankful for the time to just be with my wife and kids! We took our kids to a beautiful village located in the Baja California Sur of Mexico called Todos Santos. It was a great chance to unplug, whale watch and help release baby sea turtles at a turtle sanctuary.

We have School Zone Flashers! Please be cognizant that there are new school zone flashers in effect on Washington Street and 144th Ave. The speed limit is 25 miles per hour and we want to set good examples for many of our new growing population of teen drivers.

Cold Weather and Windsocks - It is going to be bitter cold and snowing the next few days and we will likely have the windsocks out the rest of the week.... Please remember that you are encouraged to drop your child off at the front of their building. Please have the kids wait to exit the car when you pull over in the hug and go lane. If you (the driver) can avoid exiting the car it will make the process for entering school expeditious and safe for your child.

Measures of Academic Progress (MAPs) testing for 6-8 - Over the next four school days (Wednesday, January 4th - Monday January 9th) all middle school students will take a reading MAPs test in their Literacy class and a math MAPs tests in either their Advisory or Adroit class. Students will test on their own computer, so please remind your student to bring their computer to school fully changed and ready during this testing window. The results will be available shortly after all tests are completed under the "Reports" tab in the parent portal of Infinite Campus. These MAP assessments are normed tests that will provide us with information regarding the effectiveness of our curriculum and instruction and provide families a snapshot of how their student is doing among their grade level peers. Students will take reading and math MAPS assessments again in the spring so we can gauge growth over the course of the year.

Assessment Day for K-5 - On Friday January 13, we will hold our mid year assessment day where there will be no school for K-5 students. Each grade level will communicate the plan for the day (DRA reading assessment, Step Up to Writing assessment, etc.) including a signup genius or time that students will need to be in school. More details to come this week.

Your Alternate Me - Ty Ono, a Stargate parent, recently checked an item off of his bucket list by writing and illustrating a children's picture book. It features a unique concept that helps kids become aware of how they think, feel and behave; moreover, it includes questions to help parents facilitate insightful discussions. While the book was originally intended for younger readers, the feedback Ty has received demonstrates that kids of all ages--including adults--are able to learn valuable lessons from it.

The reception to Ty's book has been fantastic: he's already been invited by parent groups to speak and has worked with a couple of elementary schools interested in adapting the book into classroom activities.

Ty’s passion and the message of his book correlates with the work our school is doing to focus on the social emotional needs of our gifted students. Above all else, it's Ty's goal to help as many kids as possible, which is why he's made his book available to read online completely for free!

I encourage you to read this book with your child, as well as forward the link to anyone you feel it can help. You can contact Ty directly with any comments at ty@kidclarity.com.

Kids on the Move-A HUGE congratulations to Jongho Choi (10th grade) in making the All State Philharmonic Orchestra!!!

Adams 12 Bond Input-With the successful passage of the Adams 12 Bond, we will have over $5 million dollars that can be spent on Capital Construction needs. The money cannot be spent on paying for our existing building or on staff salaries/benefits. The Governance Board and I would love your feedback as to what type of capital construction needs you would like for Stargate to invest in. We will hold a community engagement night on January 11th at 5:30PM in the Secondary Commons. If you are unable to attend the 11th, please feel free to submit ideas electronically by clicking here.

I hope you all have a wonderful, safe and prosperous 2017 and look forward to a great rest of our school year.
