C Notes 10/31/16 Happy Halloween

What an AMAZING month of October it has been at Stargate! So many wonderful things have taken place with your kids and many more to come! We wanted to send out a special combination Hischke Happenings!/Cable Connections/C Notes to highlight them all!

I apologize for the parking craziness today during our Halloween Parade at the K-5 building. Please feel free to park in the hug and go lane during school-wide events if all other parking spots are full.

Stargate Way - Last Wednesday we invited our entire high school student body over to spend time with our kindergarten through fifth grade students. During our elementary school's “Stargate Way” time, our high school student leaders spent time with small groups of students discussing their varying interests, passions, and building relationships. Our goal is for our high school students to become peer mentors and be a resource for our elementary kiddos as they grow through the social emotional challenges of

being a gifted student!  The interactions we observed reinforced the amazing community we have and how proud I am of our students, staff and parents for being a part of these kids lives!

Field House -  Today marks the first day our incredible new field house is officially open for class!imagejpeg (1).jpg

Mr. Spletzer, Ms. O’Neill and all of their PE students have been incredibly patient and flexible the past t8 weeks as we awaited the opening of this amazing new space. Thanks to Mr. Spletzer and his ‘Crew’ who spent Saturday setting up our new weight room and fitness area! Our students were very excited to be able to have PE in a ‘real’ gym today. Keep an eye out for information regarding open hours for parents and staff!

Honor Society -  Congratulations to our first ever class of National Honor Society. We had wonderful ceremony last Wednesday night where 25 10th graders were inducted into NHS for the first time at Stargate. Congratulations to our largest class of National Junior Honor Society (7th & 8th graders). We had wonderful ceremony last Wednesday morning where 60 members were inducted into NJHS.

No Shave November - Throw out your razors and join the Stargate staff as we raise awareness for prostate cancer. Men and Women are encouraged to join us as we donate the money we would have spent on our razors and shaving cream to cancer research! I apologize in advance for the Hairiness!

High School Fall Sports Wrap Up - Our Boys Soccer, Girls Volleyball, Coed Cross Country and Coed Mountain Biking teams wrapped up their seasons last week. Our Boys Soccer lost a tough game vs STEM HS on Thursday night. They worked hard all season long and I would like to thank all the players, parents and especially Coach Hicks for a great season. Our volleyball team capped a 6 -2 season beating STEM HS on Friday night in the field house! The JV team remained undefeated at home (3-0)! Great job to all the girls and thanks to Coach Reynard and Coach Anthony for a great season. Cross Country had a great season and had a boys and girls team for the first time! Ashley Dibonas finished 3rd in the freshman championship. Matthew Bonfiglio Oswald finished 10th in the freshman championship race. Nick Kemp improved upon his previous school record (set last year) by running 3.1 miles in 19:38. The entire team improved and we would like to thank Coach Vaughan for a great season. Our Mountain Biking team of twelve racers finished their second season and registered our first ever lady racer. This year was a great success, all riders  improved on their times and abilities.  We had 100% participation in the “optional” races.  These races are tough for both riders and parents since they are all 2-3 hours away and take the entire day commitment and sometimes the part of the day before.  Thanks to Coach Seger and Coach Flannigan.

Winter High School Sports - Boys and Girls HS basketball begins with a preseason camp on November 7th. High School Girls, coached by Mr. C and Mrs. Sergeeff will practice at 6:30 AM every morning while our Boys team, coached by Coach Gray will practice at 5:30PM. Check our Athletics page for more information.

Turf Fields- Our turf fields are currently being installed and will be completed by December (weather depending). We will have two full length soccer fields, one that is new with a sand infill and one that used (donated from the University of Colorado) that will have a crumb rubber infill.

High School Dance-  We had an incredible first high school dance in our new building on Saturday, October 22nd. Our high school Student Goverment did a great job decorating the dance to give it a fun “Hollywood” feel. We had a great turnout, with 155 students in attendance. Not bad for a high school of only 170 students.

Elementary Student Leadership- Last week our 3rd - 5th grade students voted for our inaugural Elementary Student Council. Congratulations to 3rd & 4th grade representatives: Ellie Wilson, Gabriela Umekubo, Jadyn Bratcher, Anna Herzog, Camden Cottrell, Alysah Messenger, Shriya Sharma, Keely Waterman. Congratulations to 5th grade representatives: Emmerson Peller, Garrett Baldwin, Auraya Devine, Dylan Perkins, Reed Schoenfeld, Danielle Landavazo, Tegan Johnson, Abigail Umbenhouer.  These students will work to develop a positive school environment and provide a partnership between students, teachers, staff, administration, parents, and the wider community.

Adams 12 Bond - The Adams 12 Five Star Schools Board of Education approved the placement of a $350 million bond on the November ballot at no tax rate increase to residents. The 2016 Bond proposal (Ballot Issue 3D) provides funding to Adams 12 Five Star Schools and will impact every student, school and community.  A bond is a voter-approved funding source that is used for capital improvements such as building repairs or new schools and cannot be used for salary or operational needs. The funding that Stargate received for our expansion was from private bonds that we must pay back out of our operating dollars over the next 30 years. If the Bond passes Stargate will receive over $5.1 million dollars that we could use toward additional improvements and upgrades to our new campus.

Admission Season is Here -   November marks the beginning of Admissions for the 2017-2018 school year for our school. We offer weekly tours and a variety of prospective parent nights for interested families. Please direct anyone who may be interested to our admission site.

My Kids Lunch Update

Our new lunch program from My Kids Lunch is running smoothly. Students are trying different menu items and we give feedback every week to the caterers about how to make the lunches better.  As an example, Italian Vinaigrette salad dressing is now available upon request, in addition to Ranch, portion sizes are being closely monitored and different sides combinations are being considered for future menus.  Pictures are being added to the online menu and field trips are added as they are scheduled.  If you order lunch for your child and they are out sick, you can come pick up the lunch or have a sibling eat it if they want to.  Please email febi.yuwono@stargateschool.org if you need your child’s lunch “to-go” (this option is NOT for field trips).  Please remember that lunches MUST be ordered 48 hours in advance.  If you want to see how the lunchroom works, please volunteer to help serve pizza on Fridays-sign up HERE for Elementary or Here for Secondary.  (Awesome Lunch volunteers pictured above)

Advance/Advisory/Off Period - Middle and High School

Now that the school year is well underway, I want to provide a reminder about a few opportunities students have to get homework done at school and get extra help from teachers.

  • Advance - Middle and High School - Advance class happens once a week on Thursday for both middle school and high school. During Advance, students check in with their Advance teacher and can then go to any of their teachers for help. If a student chooses not to go get help, they stay in their assigned Advance class and can use the time as a study hall.

  • Advisory - Middle School - Advisory is a class that meets either A day or B day for each middle school student. The purpose of Advisory is for students to complete homework or study. It is also the expectation that students complete a weekly grade check/missing assignment check during Advisory.

  • Off Period - High School - Most high school students have an off period somethime throughout the day. Students may spend this time in the commons or lounges upstairs. Students are self directed during this time and are encouraged to use the time to complete homework or study.

Mentoring - High School

We kicked off our high school mentoring program in Adroit last Wednesday. Every high school student went to the elementary building to meet the teacher they would be working with and spend some time getting to know the students they will be mentoring for the remainder of the year. Beginning in November, high school students will be going to the elementary building once a month to lead gifted discussion groups and help younger students with passion projects.
