C Notes 9/18/17

posted Sep 18, 2017, 2:53 PM by Jane Baker

Dear Stargate Family,

In our ongoing efforts to keep the community informed of happenings at the school, and in our efforts for transparency, I am including information regarding inquiries from the Office for Civil Rights that was shared at the Board of Directors meeting last Wednesday, and in a community message last Thursday.

The Office for Civil Rights (OCR) of the U.S. Department of Education (Department) is responsible for enforcing Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. As a recipient of Federal financial assistance from the Department of Education, Stargate is subject to this law and regulation.

As noted on the OCR website, the opening of an investigation in no way implies that they have made a determination with regard to its merit. During the investigation, the OCR is a neutral fact-finder, collecting and analyzing relevant evidence from the complainant, the recipient, and other sources, as appropriate. If you would like more information about the OCR you can read more at http://www.ed.gov/ocr

Since January 2017, we have received data requests from the OCR for inquiries into the Stargate admissions policy, operational practices, and Special Education compliance. To date, we have resolved two inquiries with very positive outcomes for our school. The resolutions of the two cases call for additional training for school staff in the areas of Special Education and Admission to Stargate. It also calls for adjustments to the language in our Admissions Policy.

The training that specific staff will participate in includes Special Education Evaluations, Eligibility, Discipline, Implementation of Individual Education Plans  IEPs,  and 504s. On the admission application for new students to our school, we are no longer to ask if a student has been placed on a 504 or IEP plan prior to attending Stargate. We will also attend a training on non-discrimination of disabled students as it pertains to admissions to Stargate.

While the OCR has not ruled that we have violated the civil rights of any staff, students or community member, we see these inquiries as an audit of our practices and procedures. Our focus remains on providing our students with the best gifted education experience possible. We are committed to always getting better and welcome the professional development opportunities that will strengthen our students.

Fundraising Allocation Committee

As you know, our Fundraising Committee works extremely hard to raise funds for our school. They do this through the Fall Fundraiser (kicking off 9/20/17), the Annual Campaign, and the Gala as well as smaller fundraising events throughout the year. Your participation in these fundraising events is vital to the success of our funding efforts.

The Governance Board is excited to present you with an option to request how these funds are used through the newly chartered Fundraising Allocation Committee (FAC). The FAC is comprised of two Fundraising Committee Members, Elementary Principal, Secondary Principal, and HS Student Government President. The FAC will distribute a large percentage of fundraising dollars for community requests three times per year.  Any current Stargate stakeholder (student, staff or parent) is welcome to apply for funds to purchase items/materials for the school. Requests can be made for individual needs (classroom, technology, materials, etc.), group needs (team, club, program, etc.) or other requests that may be a want or need. There is no limit to the amount of funds that can be requested through the FAC, however, requests that exceed $5,000 must go to the Board for approval. If you have questions please reach out to Mrs. Hischke or Mr. Cable. The first round of requests are due by September 29, 2017. The FAC will meet on October 10, 2017 to review the first round of requests. In order to be considered for funds, please fill out a request for funds on the Google Form found here. More information can be found on the Fundraising Allocation Committee webpage.

All the request deadlines and FAC review meetings are listed below:

Round 1 - Requests due September 29th, FAC reviews requests on Oct. 10th

Round 2 - Requests due December 1st, FAC reviews request on December 13th

Round 3 - Requests due March 23rd, FAC reviews request on April  11th

Thanks again for continuing to support our Fundraising Committee! Without them, we would not have this opportunities to benefit our community.

High School Internship Hosting Opportunity for Community Members

One of the requirements for our 11th grade students in Adroit this year is to complete a 20-hour internship/job shadow in a career field of their interest. If you or someone you know would be interested in hosting an 11th grade Stargate intern/job shadow, please complete this form by Friday of this week. We will then give the results to the students and leave it to them to contact the potential internship host for more information. Completing this form does not guarantee you will be contacted, but will provide us with a database of potential internship hosts this year and for the years to come. Below is a list of career fields that students have identified an interest in;  we are also looking for internship hosts in all career fields, as seeing an option that students were not aware of may spark their interest. Career fields that current 11th grade students have expressed interest include: Petroleum Engineer, Psychology/Talk Therapy, Game Design, Technical Theater, Film and Screenwriting, Electrical Engineering, Politician, Environmental Scientist, Engineering, Aerospace and/or Astrophysics, Exotic Veterinarian, Zoology, Psychology, Law, Business Management/Marketing, Forensic Psychology, Graphics Programming, Pediatrician, anything with little kids, Archaeology, Civil Engineering, Criminal Justice, Fashion Marketing, Chemical/Mechanical/Aeronautical Engineering, Veterinarian, Emergency Medicine, Military Medicine, Public Health, Actor, Dermatology, Computer Science, something English related, Medical Field, Athletic Trainer, and Public Health, to name some of the fields our students are interested in pursuing!

If you have questions about hosting an intern, please reach out to our Secondary Principal, Rob Cable, at robert.cable@stargateschool.org.

Fundraising Committee

The Fundraising Committee is searching for more volunteers! If you like planning events and want to get involved in your child's school, the Fundraising Committee is the place to be! We have several crucial fundraising programs that need support - no experience necessary. Contact fundraising@stargateschool.org for more information.

King Soopers Fundraising Gift Cards

Support Stargate fundraising efforts by purchasing a Stargate reloadable King Soopers $5.00 gift card; these are available for purchase at the Stargate Secondary front office. Every time you reload the card, King Soopers will donate 5% of the reloaded amount to Stargate (at no cost to you). You can even reload directly at the register before you purchase your items. Use the cards for your grocery shopping or when purchasing gas -- support your school while you shop.  This is a way for King Soopers to encourage shoppers to patronize their store and for them to support non-profit organizations. For more information, click here.

If just 300 Stargate families reload their cards with $200 each month to use on groceries and/or gas our school will earn $3,000/month and $36,000/year! This is one of the easiest ways to help Stargate earn $$!!!

Amazon Smile Fundraising Program

Sign up to support Stargate by using AmazonSmile (go to: smile.amazon.com and Sign up ). AmazonSmile is a simple and automatic way for you to support Stargate every time you shop, at no cost to you. When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to Stargate (0.5% of all qualifying purchases will go back to our school). It's fast, easy and links directly to your current Amazon account.

You use the same account on Amazon.com and AmazonSmile. Your shopping cart, Wish List, wedding or baby registry, and other account settings are also the same.

On your first visit to AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), you need to select a charitable organization to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. Every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation. For more details, click here.

CRC Update

In the spirit of transparency, the CRC wants everyone to know what the CRC fee of $5 per child is for.  This fee was included in the back-to-school fees.  The funds collected will go directly to meals for the teachers and staff, organized by the CRC, during the fall and spring parent-teacher conferences and during teacher appreciation week in May.  This will allow the CRC to plan for these meals without having to ask the community for financial assistance each time.

Are you an elementary room parent?  The CRC is hosting a Room Parent 101 informational workshop on Wednesday, September 20 at 8:05 in the Elementary Commons.  We are asking all elementary room parents to join us, if possible, to learn more about this important volunteer job, how to make it successful and understand the responsibilities.  If you can’t attend, please contact Stacy Tempas at stacy@tempas.com.

SAVE THE DATE!!  Harry Potter Night is in the works for Friday, October 27, 6:00 – 8:30pm.  We will be having an art and writing contest beginning September 18.  Details will be coming home with your student.

The CRC next meeting is Wednesday, October 11, 8:15 am at Daylight Donuts.  Join us if you’re interested in helping with any of our events.

Stargate HS Volleyball  "Hope for Gabs" benefit

Stargate Volleyball will be hosting a "Hope for Gabs" benefit to honor Gabriella, sister of Stargate High School Volleyball player Adriana Spangler. Gabriella is currently a second grader at Cornerstone Christian Academy battling leukemia. She is one of our biggest fans and deserves a night she will never forget! We are asking for you to join us at our home game on October 4th (Varsity - 5:00pm) and support Gabriella by wearing PINK! All proceeds from our basket raffle and admissions will go directly to her family to help with medical expenses. A limited number of PINK t-shirts will be available for sale for $10 at the door.
