C Notes 4/17/18

posted Apr 17, 2018, 2:26 PM by Jane Baker

With the Adroit Expo upon us, I felt it was a good time to remind everyone the difference between the Adroit Classes that are taken by Stargate students of all ages and levels, and the Adroit Expo.

The word Adroit itself (a·droit, adjective) is a synonym of “gifted”, meaning clever or skillful in using the hands or mind. We felt like this word perfectly captured our work around inspiring Stargate students to always embody a lifelong love of learning!  Our challenge is to design, implement and test a program that incorporates gifted standards as well as P21's Framework for 21st Century Learning. We are constantly evaluating and incorporating new ideas into our work.

Adroit Program:  Stargate’s Adroit Program began in 2015, encouraging students to approach problem-solving in a participatory manner, rather than in theory alone. The Adroit Program develops and enhances students’ approach to all life’s situations and problems, and is rooted in the five elements of design-thinking: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test.  Classes are taught at age-appropriate levels beginning in kindergarten and will expand through the 12th grade beginning in the 2018-2019 school year.  While the curriculum will continue to expand and develop, the elements of design-thinking will remain the same.

Adroit Expo:  The first Adroit Expo was held during the 2016-2017 school year and is a day for the whole school to present their passion projects to the community.  Students begin investigating their passions at the beginning of the school year by choosing an area of passion and creating a project based on this passion.  There are no grades and no limitations to passion projects, however, on Expo Day, students will present their project to the entire school community including peers, teachers and parents.  Community members who have turned their passion into a career are also invited to attend and present. We want our students to understand that a passion can become a lifelong pursuit!

I would like to invite all community members to attend the 2018 Adroit Expo on April 27th from 8:15 AM to 2:15 PM.  If you, as a parent or community member, would like to participate, please reach out to me by Friday, April 20th at josh.cochran@stargateschool.org.  I would love to have many parents who are passionate about what they do show our students how pursuing a career out of passion can make a positive impact on their lives and their contribution outside of Stargate.

We are now into our third year of Adroit, and the possibilities of this program are continuing to amaze me each day. I am very excited to continue to build out each area of Adroit, and truly incorporate it into the Stargate Way.  Thank you to our community of parents for supporting Adroit, and all it can mean to our kids.

Community communications will be sent through School Messenger. Please add:  stargate@adams12.org to your approved email list.
