C Notes 3/12/18

What an AMAZING GALA!!!! A tremendous thank you to our Amazing Volunteers that worked tirelessly to make Saturday night such a success! Our school is such an amazing place and it is due in large part to our dedicated staff, generosity of our community, and time spent from volunteers on a first class events!  


With only two weeks until spring break, we have a very busy March! State Testing, Spring Sports, Academic Competitions, and Board Town Halls. All leading us to April where we will have the Spring Musical, Adroit Expo, RallyCross Car Show and our first ever PROM!!!!


Recognizing some of the recent student demonstrations nationwide and locally in the aftermath of the tragedy in Florida, some of our high school students have expressed interest in wanting to voice their views by joining a nationwide school walkout on March 14th. In preparing for this possibility we have discussed how to handle this as a staff and identified a safe location for the students to gather on school grounds. I know many of you have received the below email from Superintendent Chris Gdowski. I wanted to include his message below and reiterate a few points specific to Stargate:


- Stargate School respects the right of our students to express their views and opinions as long as it is done safely and respectfully.
- The school does not endorse any particular viewpoint, political position, or advocacy group.
- Our job as a school is to facilitate the safety of our students, to minimize the disruption to the learning environment and to get back to educating students as soon as the event has ended.

We will have staff outside to supervise our students and ensure safety.

Dear Five Star Families,

As you likely know, there have been several demonstrations, events and school walkouts across the nation in response to the recent tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Organizers have largely utilized social media to encourage students from across the country to participate in upcoming events.

We recognize some of our students will want to express their views by participating in the national events or by creating their own. We have shared guidance with school staff in handling these potential events at their schools with the primary focus being to facilitate the safety of our students and minimizing the disruption to the learning environment. You will hear from your school principal in the coming days if they are aware of any student-led events at your child’s school.

Adams 12 Five Star Schools respects the rights of our students to express their views as long as they do so safely and respectfully. In the event students want to leave class to participate in a student-led demonstration, they will be allowed to do so and we will follow our normal policies regarding student attendance. Any students leaving school grounds will not be supervised by school or district staff.

Elementary and Middle School parents should follow normal student checkout procedures should their student be leaving school. Students cannot leave the school without a parent/guardian checking the student out of the building.

At High Schools, regular attendance will be taken and parents wishing to excuse their student’s absence should follow the school’s published attendance policy.

All staff members have a responsibility to maintain an environment which is safe and conducive to learning. All students will be provided the same safety and respect regardless of if they choose to participate or not participate in any student-led demonstrations.

We also need your help. We encourage families to have conversations with their children about the coordinated events that have been circulating nationally. Discuss expectations and outcomes that can come with participating in such activities, including walkouts. Asking your child questions about the potential to demonstrate will lead to rich discussion about the issues and how to gain influence about an issue. Appropriate statements of position, letters to legislators, and digging deeper into an issue are invaluable in the learning process.

The safety of our students and staff is our priority. Through our ongoing partnership with local law enforcement we regularly evaluate our policies, procedures and practices, looking for opportunities to enhance safety and security in our schools. In addition, we are in the process of creating a task force that will be comprised of students, staff, parents, law enforcement and community members to take a deeper look into school safety and how we can reinforce or enhance our current policies and procedures. We will provide more information about the task force this spring.

Fostering a safe and secure environment is a partnership between staff, parents, students, law enforcement and the community. We value the priority our community puts on safety and thank you for partnering with us to focus on the safety and well-being of our students.

Passing of founding Stargate parent Don Stanwyck-

Don and his wife, Jody, along with Nancy Hall and Doug Morrow, were part of the team that founded Stargate. Don served on the Board and and was a great advocate for the charter movement and the need for a specialized school that could serve gifted students. The Stanwycks moved to Seattle after the school opened for an opportunity with Microsoft. Don was very passionate about gifted education; his work ethic above none and without his dedication and amazing work, there wouldn’t be a Stargate. Don Stanwyck died in a plane crash in Washington State February 12th. A Memorial Service for friends, family and Stargate partners planned for the afternoon of April 7th at Village Baptist Church just past Colorado Blvd on 128th street. Are you ready for Dodgeball? The 11th annual Stargate Dodgeball Tournament is set for April 6th and 7th in the Field House!  You can play on a team or watch your friends, family and teachers play!

Please register by March 23 by going to the sign-up genius links above.  Teams will be comprised of up to 10 players and must be comprised of consistent grade groupings: K; 1-2; 3-4; 5th; middle school and high school.   Teams will play their own grade group (K; 1-2; 3-4; 5th; middle school and high school).

All teams are due by March 23 with email confirmations to be sent on or before March 30.  Rules, code of conduct and waivers will be sent with the team confirmation. You can sign up as a team, partial team, or free agent.  Partial teams will be completed with free agents. Each team is required to have one Parent Team Manager.

By April 2, Parent Team Managers should submit the official team name, team payment of $20 (or $2 per player) and all team waivers in an envelope marked with the team name and grade group to the front desk.  If you have an elementary team, please turn in at the elementary front desk. If you have a middle school or high school team, please turn in at the secondary front desk.

Teams can practice in the Field House April 3 from 3:45-5:30.  The Parent Team Manager will be in charge of practicing with their team and explaining the rules.

First and second place will be awarded to each grade group.  Teams should plan to check in 30 minutes before the start time on Game Day.  Stargate’s very own WATCHDOGS will be the referees.

To reduce the paper waste, sign-ups will be ONLINE ONLY.  If you have questions about the sign-up or need help, please contact CRC at crc@stargateschool.org.

Admission is $1 at the door for spectators.  Student volunteers from Student Council, NJHS, and NHS will be selling concessions with all of the proceeds going to the Stargate Scholars Savings fund.

The next CRC meeting is Wednesday, March 14 at 8:15am at Daylight Donuts.

Stargate Annual Fundraising Gala
A HUGE "Thank You!!!' to our fabulous Gala Fundraising Committee!! What a fun, successful night this past Saturday!!

Of course, any successful fundraiser needs a committed and supportive community -- Thank You to our generous, amazing community: parents, teachers, staff, High School Volunteers, family and business donors, sponsors, fundraising committee (and their spouses and kids) and more.  We ❤ (heart) our Stargate SUPPORTERS!!! Totals are not yet available but we will share that with the community as soon as possible.

Information on gala pictures can be found on Facebook, with more photos coming (look for that info in the next version of C Notes). And look for poster-sized signs recognizing our sponsors and donors in the Elementary and High School foyers.

CycleBar (indoor cycling) - March 18th
Workout and raise $$ for Stargate on Sunday, March 18th at 12:30 pm. Stargate will be hosting a new type of fundraiser at CycleBar, an indoor cycling facility located in Westminster across from The Orchard's shopping center.  Come have fun, burn calories, get energized and get an amazing indoor ride. 100% of the proceeds go directly to the school - our first event raised $800 for Stargate and we had a blast!! Mimosas and snacks will be served after the ride. $20 per person for the first 25 riders and $25 thereafter.

The First Annual Stargate High School After Prom Fundraiser March 1st - April 10th
The High School students will be selling Mazzotti Farms Patio Pots and Hanging Baskets to raise money for the parent sponsored After-Prom. After-Prom provides a safe, alcohol and drug-free environment where kids can celebrate their Prom night from 11:00 - 2:00 a.m. A portion of the profits will also go towards general school-wide needs.

Start saving Tyson labels for our Tyson label redemption contest. Each label will earn Stargate $.24/each. This contest will go thru May 1st and the winning class will win an ice cream sundae party. Fundraising​ ​Allocation​ ​Committee
The Fundraising Allocation Committee is excited to announce the third round of fundraising allocations. Request Applications are due by Friday March 23, 2018 and the FAC will meet on April 10th, 2018 to review all applications.

Any current Stargate Stakeholder, teacher or current Stargate student is welcome to apply for funds to purchase items/materials. Requests will be prioritized based on impact to students, programs, and teachers. If you have questions please reach out to your building principal. Requests that exceed $5000 must be approved by the Governance Board.
