Lockdown

Tomorrow(Tuesday) we will partner with Thornton Police Department to complete our fall lockdown drill. This is an Adams 12 requirement that will take place twice per year. The fall drill is prearranged and the spring drill is unannounced. During this drill teachers will turn the lights off in the classroom, close their already locked classroom door and move all students to a corner of the room. Students will then sit quietly until a police officer unlocks the classroom door and tells them what a great job they did!

Windsock

A windsock day is an inside day when the wind chill/temperature is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit or heavy precipitation is present. Students will be directed to enter the school through the main entrances and proceed directly to the commons. Colorful windsocks will be displayed at different locations around the outside of the school to indicate that conditions exist for a windsock day. This will not be a large change for the secondary building, but will greatly impact the elementary building and drop off around 8:00 am may look different.

School pictures available in front office

If your student ordered school pictures, they are available for your student to pick up in the Secondary Building Front Office.

High School Internship Hosting Opportunity for Community Members

Below is a message that was sent out in the C Notes newsletter last Monday. Thank you to those who have responded. Unfortunately we only had nine responses and I know our community can do better than that for our students. Please consider the message below and tap into your network to see if we can provide our students more internship possibilities.

One of the requirements for our 11th grade students in Adroit this year is to complete a 20-hour internship/job shadow in a career field of their interest. If you or someone you know would be interested in hosting an 11th grade Stargate intern/job shadow, please complete this form by Friday of this week. We will then give the results to the students and leave it to them to contact the potential internship host for more information. Completing this form does not guarantee you will be contacted, but will provide us with a database of potential internship hosts this year and for the years to come.

National Junior Honor Society (Middle School)

National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) will be sending out eligibility letters later this week.   NJHS is a service society for students with high academic achievement who demonstrate leadership, citizenship, and character.  To be eligible for NJHS, a student needs to have a GPA of 3.5 and higher for the last two semesters at Stargate. Once the student has been notified of eligibility, the student will need to complete the application process explained in the letter of eligibility.  New to Stargate students who were members at their previous schools can transfer their membership to Stargate’s chapter by showing proof of membership to Mrs. Root, the NJHS sponsor.  Eligible students will receive an email at their Stargate account September 26, 2017.  Applications will be due October 20, 2017, students will be notified by October 25, 2017 and induction will be 8:30 am on November 1, 2017 in the Secondary Commons.

National Honor Society (High School)

Qualified high school students interested in National Honor Society have submitted their  Student Information Dossier and the Stargate High School Faculty Council is currently reviewing all dossiers. A letter of selection or non-selection will be sent via USPS on October 6th and the induction ceremony will be held on Thursday, November 30th from 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm in the Secondary Commons.

Middle and High School Fall Conferences

We are anticipating shortest wait time on Thursday, October 12, 10am-2:30pm. Please see below for schedule:

Western Academic Talent Search - (Taking the ACT in Middle School)

What is the Western Academic Talent Search?

WATS is an opportunity for middle school students to take college entrance tests. These tests offer a higher ceiling than standardized state or national grade-level tests. The Center for Bright Kids, a national non-profit Regional Talent Development Center, holds its recognition ceremony (for students who perform in the top 25% of their peers on the tests) every spring at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO.

Who can participate?

Stargate 7th and 8th grade students received eligibility letters today that allow them to take the ACT as middle school students.  Although all 3rd  - 9th grade gifted students are allowed to participate in the Western Academic Talent Search, we feel that benefit is greatest for our 7th and 8th grade students, and we really don't want to push our younger students to do more testing than necessary.  Our 6th - 9th grade students can take the ACT or SAT, and 3rd - 6th grade students can take the PSAT 8/9.

WHY should 7th and 8th graders participate?

Taking the ACT as a 7th or 8th grader will give our students some confidence and familiarity with the test, which could prove to be a distinct advantage when it comes to future testing and scholarship opportunities.  This year, we recommend that our 7th and 8th graders take the ACT.  We like to alternate each year, so students have a chance to take both the SAT and ACT within a 2 year rotation, so next year we will recommend taking the SAT.  Both the SAT and the ACT are used by universities and other organizations to award college scholarships to high school seniors.

How do we sign up?

If you would like your student to participate, you must apply online through the CBK home page no later than December 15 for the ACT.  Go to www.centerforbrightkids.org and click the APPLY NOW link and make payment ($100).  A copy of the qualification letter that your student was given today must be uploaded online for eligibility.  We will also send out a digital copy of the qualification letter today via infinite campus e-mail to all 7th and 8th grade parents.

When and where is the test given?

This year, we recommend that our 7th and 8th graders take the ACT at Centaurus High School at 10300 W South Boulder Rd. (location code 166500) on February 10, 2018.  Mathcounts participants - be advised, unfortunately this date conflicts with a mathcounts competition.  Alternate dates are available - please see the Center for Bright Kids website for those dates.

How can my student prepare?

Mrs. McVeigh will also host four free ACT prep sessions in her classroom at Stargate from 3:45 to 4:45 on January 11, 18, 25, and February 1.  Students will receive an e-mail in December to sign up for those prep sessions.

Who do I contact if I have questions?

After reading all of the FAQs above, if you still have questions, please contact Mrs. McVeigh ( jessica.mcveigh@stargateschool.org ) for Stargate related questions.  If you have questions about the Center for Bright Kids or the talent search in general, contact the Center for Bright Kids directly at (303) 428-2634, cbk@centerforbrightkids.org.
