Middle School Adroit Update

Students continue to work on their Stargate Way woodworking projects. These projects were inspired by the vast diversity of the Stargate staff as well as their vision of what makes Stargate GREAT! The beautiful pieces of art are looking fantastic and will be presented to the staff member in which it was inspired next week!

Adroit Donations What We Need:

All the weather is changing so are the projects that we are working on. In November we will start using Raspberry Pi to build our own computers.  In order to do this, we will need working computer monitors, computer keyboards, and mice. If you have any at your house or work that you can donate, that would be wonderful and would be greatly appreciated. They can be dropped off at the Secondary front office or to Mr. Varel in the Adroit Space.

Keyboards Needed for Music Theory Class

The Stargate Community, do you have any musical keyboards that aren't being used?  The high school music theory class needs your keyboards next semester.  In class, the students will need to demonstrate and understand how to incorporate music theory and the best way to teach this is by using keyboards.  If you can please donate your keyboard to Mrs. Pegler in the Secondary building.  The keyboards should be 3-4 octaves and should be able to plug in and also have a place for batteries.  If it includes a music stand with it, even better but not necessary.  Please drop off by December 20th.   If you have any questions, please email me at:

Western State Honor Orchestra

This past weekend, we had three of our Stargate high school students participate at the Western State Honor Orchestra at UNC from Thursday through Saturday.  This prestigious orchestra is highly selective in their audition process.  We were fortunate to have Jongho Choi make it in again and then two of our freshman, Ehna Choi and Jacob Lei.  The other girl in the picture is a junior from Legacy who joined us.  If you see them, please offer them your congratulations.  They worked very hard to get to this orchestra and even more once they were there.

Winterfest XIII  Winterfest is a celebration of music performed by the students of Stargate. It will be held Friday December 8th at 6:30pm in the Secondary Commons.

Winterfest format this year:

This year, we'll be trying a different setup for the smaller musical acts.  We will be organizing the group acts, (not the large ensembles) by musical period and style: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, and Contemporary.  We will also have one for holiday/seasonal tunes.  Each musical period will be performed in a different location in the school during the middle portion of the concert.  The audience members will be able to visit and do a gallery walk and the same time while enjoying art from the same time periods. The middle and high school ensembles will also be performing at the beginning and end of the concert program.

What type of music should I audition on?

Students can audition on holiday, seasonal, pop, classical, or jazz.  Whatever music you decide to audition on, make sure it fits into one of the above categories. Below is a guideline for composer dates to help.

Baroque: 1600-1750

Classical: 1750-1820

Romantic: 1820-1910

20th Century: 1900-2000

Contemporary: 2000-current

Seasonal/Holiday: any time period

Who can audition?

Any middle school or high school Stargate student can audition on a vocal and/or instrumental music piece.  Adults, non-Stargate, or elementary Stargate students may be used as accompaniment parts only.  Vocal, chamber music, and combo music groups are highly encouraged to audition.  If you plan on singing, please make sure that the lyrics are age appropriate for all audiences.  Please remember we will be performing for families.

When are auditions?

Auditions will be different this year.  You may email me a visual recording of your audition by Tuesday November 28th.  If I have any questions or need to see a part of your audition, I will contact you.  When you email me your audition, please tell me by email all participants first and last names, duration of the piece, the title, instruments, and which time period you are wanting to audition for.  This information is very important and should be included in your audition email.

How do I sign-up?

Send your visual recording to no later than Tuesday November 28th.

How is a decision made?

The final criteria used to select pieces will be based upon: type of piece; instrumentation and variety; student grade level participation; length of piece; quality of performance; how many pieces I have for each time period; frequency of individual student participation in Winterfest and previous Winterfests.  Students selected to perform will be notified by Monday December 4th if not sooner.

What are the rules for auditioning?

.Performances should be no longer than 3 minutes.  Acts will be timed at the audition.  This is a  very strict time limit.  Time your acts ahead of time, especially the vocalists.

· No choreography this year since we have space limitations and we are getting used to the space

· No CD or taped background if the words are included.  Karaoke style is fine and encouraged if

there is no other accompaniment to singing acts.
