Influenza Update from Tri-County Health

Influenza-like illness (ILI) is a fever >100.4 and a new cough and/or sore throat.  Tri-County Health Department recommends:

  • Sending children and staff with Influenza-like illness (ILI) home until fever free for 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication;

  • Increasing hand washing;

  • Teaching everyone to cough into their arm, not their hands;

  • Increasing cleaning and sanitizing of high touch surfaces.

  • Encouraging flu vaccine for children and staff

We ask that you tell your families to  follow the same control measures at home.  Should a child become ill with influenza like illness, they should be kept home from school to prevent any further spread.  They should seek medical care for treatment and testing; it is not too late to vaccinate.

Watch your student population (and teachers) for symptoms of fever, cough, congestion, body aches, and sore throat, and if there is illness, please send them home to help stop further spread of illness.

This year’s dedicated MATHCOUNTS team is continuing Stargate’s outstanding tradition of excellence at MATHCOUNTS competitions.  MATHCOUNTS is a national organization whose mission is to “inspire excellence, confidence and curiosity in U.S. middle school students through fun and challenging math problems.”  To participate in MATHCOUNTS, students meet on a regular basis to work individually and together on math problems supplied by the MATHCOUNTS organization and participate in formal math competitions.

This year a total of 27 Middle School students are on Stargate’s team, coached by Middle/High School Math Teacher Ken Haney.  The team represented Stargate at the District Preliminary competition held Saturday, January 27, at Rocky Top Middle School.  Nearly 90 students from six schools competed at that site, while over 100 District students competed at The International School at Thornton Middle.  Our students performed well and had a great time competing.

Stargate received the 1st place trophy in the team competition.  Team members were 7th grader Jeremy Huang and 8th graders Donavon Facey, Max Kulbida, and Alvina Zhang.  Stargate students also swept the top five spots in the individual competition.  Jeremy Huang placed first, Donavon Facey placed second, 8th grader Ritwik Bhattacharjee placed third, 7th grader Allison Xin placed fourth, and Max Kulbida placed fifth.

The rest of Stargate’s competition team includes 8th graders Anika Dash, Colin Duffy, Alexa Harper, Alex Horne, Rishi Kola, Ryan Luo, Arya Nandyal, Nick Nguyen, and Alex Wallach; 7th graders Raymond Anderson, Ishita Mehta, Sibi Sivaram, and David Thumma; and 6th graders Rosemarie Anderson, Chris Chen, Aahana Dash, Nick Hofer, Pranav Konijeti, Ryan Marx, Aditya Nandyal, and Aaryan Nema.

The MATHCOUNTS team’s next competition will be the District Finals on Saturday, February 10, at which Stargate will field a team of sixteen students.  Ten students will represent Stargate at the North Metro Chapter competition on February 24, which is followed by the State Finals competition on March 17.

Knowledge Bowl

The Knowledge Bowl team did well this past weekend at the Denver Regional tournament. They won the 3A classification and placed 2nd overall, qualifying to attend the State Knowledge Bowl tournament at Colorado State University on March 12 and 13. High school students who competed are Nathan Kulhanek, Aditya Shankarling, Jacob Tow, Miles Claver, Rae Friedenson, Mark Rousskov, Rachel Castro, Brendan Bottrell.
