Señorita Wiley

About Me
My name is Kaitlin Wiley and I am a licensed K-12 Spanish teacher from Cincinnati, Ohio. This is my fifth year at Stargate and I am very happy and excited to be back! Each year keeps getting better and better, and my love for teaching gifted kiddos keeps getting stronger! During my college years, I spent 5 months living and studying abroad in Alicante, Spain and I graduated from Miami University of Ohio in 2012 with a B.S. in Spanish Education. I have student taught high school, taught one year of 8th grade Spanish in the Jeffco District and since being at Stargate I have come to the realization that teaching at the elementary level is my calling! I absolutely love the Spanish language and I hope to share that love with you and your children.

After receiving my Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education endorsement, I am also continuing on in the position of English Language Development Coordinator this year, so if you have any ELD-related questions regarding literacy placement, testing, pull-out waivers, etc., please don't hesitate to contact me. I am also in the process of receiving my Gifted Endorsement, and I was able to apply for my Professional Teaching License during the summer of 2016 after completing the two-year induction process here at Stargate. This year, I will continue mentoring my first Stargate teacher! :) A little bit more about me: I am the oldest of 6 children, I have 3 sisters and 2 stepbrothers, and they are awesome! In my spare time I enjoy reading, cooking, going to see live music, continuing my education (after receiving an endorsement in CLDE, I plan to continue on to receive my Masters) and spending time with family, my awesome fiancee, Mike, and my sweet puppy Callie.

What I Love about Teaching
Believe it or not, I have wanted to be a teacher since the 4th grade. Every year I came to school excited and ready to learn new things (the summer was never short enough!) and I was blessed to attend one of the top public school districts in the state of Ohio. I had wonderful teachers who never ceased to amaze and inspire me and I knew that one day I wanted to be just like them. When I started taking Spanish in the 7th grade I knew that it would be my content area of choice. The language itself is so beautiful and to me it was like knowing a secret code that no one else could understand. This will be my 15th year speaking/studying/teaching Spanish and I have cherished every minute of it. What I love most of all about teaching is the "ah-hah" moment. Seeing that look on the kids' faces when they begin to understand what I'm saying in Spanish and they are able to process it without a second thought is absolutely breathtaking. It makes each day worth it.

Spanish 2: Students will learn greetings and courtesies, school materials and objects, colors, shapes, parts of the body and descriptions (i.e. long hair, big feet, etc.), various animals, statements using "Tengo...", names of extended family members, basic weather expressions, and review of numbers 1-30 (curriculum based on "Viva el español" Lessons 1-12).

Spanish 4: Students will read a book entitled 'Las aventuras de Isabela' about a young girl who can't manage to keep herself out of trouble while traveling with her mother. The book utilizes all vocabulary and grammar learned in previous years in a culmination of 200 high frequency words to tell a 2,000 word story, which is then divided into 10 chapters. The students will read the book, complete additional supplements as well as a final project at the end of the trimester.

Spanish 5: Students will read the sequel to the previous year's book, entitled 'Isabela captura un congo' about Isabela's continued adventures during a trip to Costa Rica. The book utilizes all previous vocabulary and grammar, with several new additions, in a culmination of 350 high frequency words to tell a 3,500 word story, which is then divided into 10 chapters. The students will read the book, complete additional supplements as well as a final project at the end of the trimester.

SUMMARY: Spanish K and 1 will be focusing on listening, Spanish 2 and 3 will be focusing on writing, Spanish 4 and 5 will be focusing on reading. ALL levels will be focusing on speaking.

Blogging:
I will be creating 7 blogs: Kindergarten Spanish, Spanish 1, Spanish 2, Spanish 3, Spanish 4, Spanish 5 and ELL. I will update the Spanish blogs on a weekly basis, so please be mindful of that if you want to check up on what the students have been working on in class, their homework, upcoming assessments, etc. I will be updating the ELL blog at several points throughout the year regarding testing schedules, parent information, and resources to use at home. If you have a specific question that the blogs may not answer, please contact me at the email address above.

I will be creating a 'Google Classroom' for 2nd-5th grades where students will be able to access assignments we work on in class, download copies of the homework and PowerPoints. I will also post these things on the blogs each week. Additionally, I will be sending home paper copies of homework assignments for all grades, so you will have these in 3 places: either on paper, through Google Classroom or online. I try to send out notices of 'Missing' assignments on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, so please be vigilant in checking your email for those.

Grading:
I keep all grades on Infinite Campus which you can access from the menu.  All other information is in my blogs. Please attempt to at least take a glance at your child's grades once a week. I do my best to update IC at least once or twice a week and it's very important to me that any concerns you may have about your child's progress are met in a timely manner. With the large number of students that I serve, it is not always possible for me to be aware of every child's grades at every point in time, so it is VERY important that parents assume responsibility for this as well. I am always available for extra help outside of class before or after school, but please contact me in advance to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure I don't have a prior commitment.

Other important information:
Here are a few online resources that students and parents can use to practice Spanish at home:

http://www.quia.com/shared/spanish/ This is a website students can use to play free computer games. Just type in a keyword (i.e. animals, numbers, etc. and all games in that category will pop up!)

http://www.studyspanish.com/ This is a website that students can use for a more "traditional" focus on grammar and vocabulary. This would be a great resource for parents with no Spanish experience who would like a straight forward explanation of what we are learning in class or to help students with any homework they may have.

https://www.duolingo.com/ This is a website where students can practice independently on topics of their choice. When registering your child, please ensure you put in my class code: SZFQYZ. This allows me to see what they are working on and to track their progress.

Here are a few online resources that students and parents can use to practice their English Language Development at home:

www.starfall.com This is a website that is very beneficial for beginning English Language Learners. It focuses on phonemic awareness and corresponds with the Kindergarten/1st Grade age groups. Students can watch videos, have stories read to them, practice sounding out and engage in various "skill drills". Can be used in correlation with the Lexia system.

http://uniteforliteracy.com/ This is a website that is geared more towards intermediate English language learners. Users can pick from a variety of books on a variety of school-relevant topics that they can then read while the book is narrated aloud to them. Great at home practice!

http://www.colorincolorado.org/atoz/ This is wonderful website filled with all things ELL-related! Topics include: parent tips, parent outreach, reading at home, motivation, multicultural education, activities, books and authors, early literacy, adolescent literacy, issues related to learning disabilities and more! This site is great for all levels of English Language Learners, whether they be students or parents.

Here are links to my Google Classrooms for the following grade levels. It is here where you can find extra copies of in class assignments, homework, and to see what topics we are covering in class.
