Mr. Phelps

About Me:

I am so honored and humbled to be your new Drama and Music Teacher here at Stargate!

While I am new to Stargate, this is my 6th year of teaching. Let me give you a brief rundown of myself! I've been a performer for 20 years now and still going strong. I was an incredibly shy and polite child and then my life was changed in an incredible way when I discovered or was rather nudged... strongly into Drama in middle school. I vividly remember the moment my freshman year of high school in a musical called Suds when I suddenly new that I wanted to perform and be involved in Drama/Theatre for the rest of my life. Drama Kid for life! In addition to drama, in school I was a percussionist from the 5th grade to the 12 grade (including Marching, Symphonic, and Jazz Band) and in High School I was in Choir, Show Choir, and TV production. During these 20 years of theatre bliss, I have performed in over 40 productions in Michigan, Colorado, and Florida. In 2010, I received a Bachelors of Arts in Theatre Arts with an Emphasis in Acting from the University of Northern Colorado and additional post grad credits in the Theatre Education program at UNC. Lastly, I have directed, choreographed, and musically directed over 10 productions at various age levels with cast/crew sizes ranging from 30 to over 100 students. As a passionate lifelong learner, I look forward to continually advancing my education/learning and pursuing a masters degree in the near future.

Enough of that for now! When I am not doing theatre related activities I enjoy hiking, karaoke, playing video games, watching way too much good television or films, writing, traveling, eating, going to museums, attending theatre/concert performances, and reading (particularly biographies as I am a huge history nerd, but US history in particular). I have a new cat named Hermione Abigail Phelps, I got her in May and she is named after Hermione Granger and Abigail Adams (two amazing females, one fictional and one real). So as you can infer from previous sentences, I am a big nerd and a fan of such nerdy things including Harry Potter, Hobbit/Lord of the Rings, Disney/Pixar, Dr. Who, Marvel & DC, Joss Whedon, video games, and many other things.

Some fun random facts about me is that my favorite TV show is Parks and Recreation as I have watched the entire series 9 times now, I am a Colorado native but I'm from Detroit, MI, I was an extra in a Bollywood film, I adore Charlie Chaplin, Mel Brooks, and Jerry Lewis, I worked/performed at Disney World for a year after college, favorite superheroes are Robin/Nightwing and Spider-man, and when I was in high school my dream career for me was to become a Comedian and go on SNL to become the next Chris Farley. I am very excited to be a part of Stargate!

What I Love about Teaching:

What I love most about teaching is getting to be able to spark passion into my students or to further their flame for learning and expression in the arts and to have that intertwine with an overall love of lifelong learning and education. I also love to help students see how amazing their individuality is and to help them embrace self-confidence in themselves around that individuality which in turn further enhances their interpersonal skills, creative expression, critical thinking skills, and the higher standards that they set for themselves and achieve. I firmly believe that with the proper guidance, motivation, and expectations, anyone at any age can create high quality professional level art that can deeply move, stimulate, and entertain an audience. I love when that happens with my students from kindergarten to 12th grade and they then set themselves to a higher standard, passion, and drive that has no limits. We are here for them now and for their future, that's what it is all about!
