This year, I will teach gifted students the following subjects:  AP Chemistry, Anatomy & Physiology, 8th Grade Physical Science and Science Olympiad.
I have been teaching at Stargate since 2010.  At Stargate, my passion has been to provide students with opportunities to shine.  I've initiated several programs at Stargate such as WATS, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Drama Club, Science Olympiad, NREL Model Car Competition, Middle School Battle of the Books, Future Medical Professionals Club, and the DC/New York Middle School Trip.  My latest passion is sponsoring Stargate's first HOSA Future Health Professionals chapter!
I am the volunteer coordinator for the Western Academic Talent Search.  Each year, I send out letters to our middle school students who qualify to take the ACT and/or SAT.  Prior to testing, I offer free ACT or SAT prep courses.  Each year, more and more of our students are outperforming high school seniors on these tests.  They are recognized at CU Boulder for their outstanding performance.
A few years ago, I was the first cross country coach at Stargate.  I took my students from fun runs like the Howl at the Moon to the Colorado Middle School State Cross Country Meet and the Bolder Boulder.  Our students focus so much on academics, and I believe it is also important for them to exercise and challenge themselves physically, if only just to run around outside in the fresh air.  With new excellent coaches, the cross country program continues to grow.
When I sponsored the drama club, I directed "Annie" in Stargate's first drama club performance.  Our students are so creative, and it was awesome to see them laugh and sing and create something great.  I am thrilled that Stargate now has a drama program and a full time drama teacher.
I coached Stargate's first Science Olympiad team, and for several years now Stargate's Science Olympiad team has advanced to State!  I am continuing to coach the Middle School Science Olympiad Team, and I am so happy to be coaching a High School Science Olympiad team this year as well.  The science olympiad students compete in 23 different science events from bottle rockets to fossils.  In April 2018, the Stargate Science Olympiad team took home the trophy for 5th place overall at State.  I am so incredibly proud of these kids.
In 2015, I coached Stargate's first NREL model car teams, and they brought home first place in the solar car competition as well as the spirit award.  In 2017 and 2018, all of my 7th grade students built and raced model cars (both solar and battery cars) as part of our unit on Ecology and clean energy.  Stargate teams took the 1st place and 3rd place trophies in the Solar Car Championship of 2017.
In June 2016, I organized the Stargate student trip to DC.  It was an amazing learning experience for our students.  In June 2018, I led another Stargate Middle School trip to DC and New York.  Students experienced a tour of the White House, the Capitol, Mt. Vernon, the Smithsonians, monuments and memorials, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Empire State Building, Times Square, and a Broadway play!  Mr. DeFord and Mrs. Krill have agreed to lead the trips in the future, and I am so glad that our students will continue to have the opportunity to experience this amazing trip!
Last year, I helped foster Stargate's first Middle School Battle of the Books.  Students read 16 books and competed in teams of 4 to answer questions about the books.  So many Stargate students love to read, and I was happy to help get this program up and running at our middle school.  Thanks to the excellent coaching of Mrs. Schmidt, Stargate's team took first place at the District Battle.
For the past few years, I have sponsored the Future Medical Professionals Club for our high school students who are interested in pursuing a medical career.  This club was actually started by a passionate student and Club President, Portia Bhattacharjee.  Events have included First Aid and CPR training, dissections, guest speakers, practice with suturing and drawing blood, laparoscopic surgery simulations, and field trips to visit the DaVinci surgical robot and the CAPE facility at University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.  This year, the Future Medical Professionals Club will now be officially a HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) Chapter.  This national affiliation will allow our students to attend leadership conferences, compete in health occupation competition events, and apply for affiliated scholarships.
Before I came to Stargate, I attended the University of Texas at Austin on a National Merit Scholarship and received a B.S. in Mathematics.  I spent 2 years teaching high school Algebra and Geometry.  I taught for 7 years in the Austin area and was named Outstanding Teacher in Region 13 for my dedication to my students at Kealing Middle School (a math/science magnet school).  I attended training to receive my Gifted and Talented Teaching Certification in Texas.  While teaching in the Magnet Program, I was recruited by the University of Texas at Austin to teach two courses for college students interested in becoming math teachers.  I spent 2 years as a Lecturer at UT for the UTeach Program, teaching "Inquiry-based Lesson Design" - using the Socratic method to teach mathematics.  I truly believe that "what you have been obliged to discover for yourself leaves a path in your mind that you can use again when the need arises".
Our family moved to Colorado in 2005.  I have two children, both currently enrolled at Stargate.  I am so happy to be teaching at Stargate, and I have a vested interest in making sure that it is absolutely the best school.  My husband is the vice president of ECM sales at a consulting company in Boulder and an incredible man for putting up with me.
In May of 2017, I received my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Adams State with a STEM Certificate from Columbia University through the NASA Endeavor STEM Program.  I am so excited to be teaching an AP course this year, and I look forward to delivering great STEM lessons in my classroom as well as supporting and encouraging other math and science teachers to deliver great lessons as well!
