SOCIAL STUDIES

Coming this week (05/14-05/18):    This week we will finish up talking about matter and then turn our attention to the Articles of Confederation and the Constitution.

Highlights from last week: Last week was the science fair.  Students did a nice job presenting to each other and the judges.  Tri-folds will be sent home as they are graded.  This will be a lengthy process as each board deserves the attention required by a 6-week project.  All boards will be done before the last day of school.  Students also attended the talk.  Boys and girls were together to go over expectations and general ground rules and then separated into two separate rooms.  The boys had a male doctor and the girls had a female doctor.  To make the boys more comfortable, Mr. VP sat in with them while we all stayed with the girls.

We are welcoming a French exchange student teacher for the next couple of weeks during some of our afternoons.  Her name is Marion Lachat and she will be with us from Feb. 20th thru March 9th.

The following is a quick snapshot of what the rest of the year will look like for the 5th grade. We intend to cover these units as deep and rigorous as possible. However, please understand that each individual class dictates the order and the speed in which things are covered. In addition, keep in mind that CMAS testing, MAPs testing, end of the year testing and other activities can impact our schedule and require us to be flexible within this timeline.

SCIENCE:

  • Human Body
      •  circulatory, nervous and respiratory systems
  • Scientific Process
  • Matter and Mixtures
  • Scientific Process

SOCIAL STUDIES

  •  The American Revolution and the Constitution

Coming this week (02/21-02/23):  The focus will shift back to the events leading up to the Revolutionary War on this short week.  On Thursday we will review for their open note test and they will take the test on Friday.  Stargate Way time on Wednesday will be used for passion projects.

Highlights from last week:  The focus of last week was the nervous system, specifically the brain.  Students took a quiz to see if they were left or right brain dominant and then took notes on some of the major parts of their brain and their functions.
