Hello Stargate Elementary Parents,

This email is to inform you that we will begin our annual ACCESS testing for English Language Learners next week. Our testing window will be from January 9th through February 9th. Please be advised that at some point during this time frame, your child(ren) will be removed from class for testing for a time period of no less than 45 minutes and no more than 2.5 hours based on their individual English ability levels in the areas of speaking, reading, writing and listening. One change continuing from last year is that the assessment will take place online for 1st-5th grades (Kindergarten will continue with the one on one student/administrator format). In order to ensure that the students feel comfortable with this testing format, we will also be pulling them from class this week in advance of the actual assessment to watch some instructional videos and complete a few practice items. This (ideally) should take no longer than 30-45 minutes and will serve to help the students feel more confident and prepared going into the test.

We will use this data, along with other standardized testing measures, to determine the best literacy placement for your child in the coming school year. Please be understanding of this and feel free to speak with your child at home about the upcoming testing in an encouraging way that will help to make them feel confident and comfortable. Additionally, please be aware that even if you have waived your child from ELD services this year, there is NO parent opt-out for ACCESS testing. Additionally, because the students are grouped by grade level clusters and tiers, you cannot schedule an assessment time for your student. For more information about the assessment, or to view sample test items, please visit the website below:

Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation, and please don’t hesitate to contact Mr. Cochran, Mrs. Hischke or myself if you should have any further questions. Have a wonderful day!
