This week we are finishing up our unit on perimeter, area and volume. Each student has creating a 3D figure and a net to accompany it. They each were able to identify the surface are of the figure by using the algorithms that they learned. We are now investigating ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS AND EQUATIONS! Things are heating up in the brains of these mathematicians!

Students will not have homework this week due to PARCC testing. Please ensure that your child gets plenty of rest and a good breakfast each morning so that they are rested, fueled, and ready to do their best!

This week students will focus on the following skills:
  • Finding the area or irregular shapes
  • Finding the area of composite figures

PARCC/CMAS Testing Dates

The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and the Colorado Measure of Academic Success (CMAS) will continue this week.

Here are the dates for all of the assessments:

PARCC for all 3rd through 5th grade students  - March 20, 21, 23, and 24

We will start with four math assessments and then complete three english language assessments (ELA). All the math assessments are 60 minutes long and the time reflects setup and time to read the instructions. The ELA assessments are all approximately 90 minutes long with time to read the directions.

Testing times for March 20

Testing times for March 21, 23, and 24

  • 8:15 - 9:30 3rd grade math

  • 9:30 - 10:45 4th grade math

  • 12:30 - 1:45 5th grade math

  • 8:15 - 10:00 3rd grade ELA

  • 10:00 - 11:45 4th grade ELA

Last week the class focused on MULTIPLYING FRACTIONS. This week we will be concentrating on DIVIDING FRACTIONS. We will only have math on Wednesday-Friday due to 3/4 field trip on Monday and Tuesday. We will be having a quiz over the content early next week.

In these last two weeks before break we are finishing the chapter and preparing for our Chapter 2 test on Wednesday the 14th. Student will be tested on what they know about fractions, decimals and percents. They will have to be able to move smoothly from one to another. Ex. What is 5/8 as a decimal and a percent? They will also need to be able to find the percent of a whole. Ex. What is 54% of $922.00? Each student has used several methods to solve these types of equations and can use any method that they see works the best in each situation. The ESSENTIAL QUESTION that we are focusing on this chapter is "When is it better to use a fraction, a decimal, or a percent"? This question has been answered in this chapter and will be put to use on this assessment. A wide array of methods can be used in different scenarios. Each student will receive a study guide on Monday to prepare for the assessment on Wednesday.

Happy Holidays!

This week student will continue comparing and ordering fractions, mixed numbers, decimals and percents. Students have investigated the topic and are now creating a game to display their knowledge of the information. Later this week, we will begin Lesson 6 and 7 in Chapter 2: Finding Percent of a Number. This skill will be helpful in real life especially around the gift giving season and all of the deals that stores are offering right now!

This week we will continue with chapter 2 and we will be discovering how decimals, fractions and percents are used in the real world and when it is better to use one over the other in a real world situation! While achieving this students will be making sense of problems and persevere to solve them, constructing viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others and using appropriate tools strategically!

This week in math we will be finishing chapter 3, Computing with Multi-Digit Numbers. We played a Jeopardy  style review game today and then we will be taking our chapter test on Tuesday, October 18th. We will be investigating math concepts via math center activities on Wednesday this week. Due to in house field trips on Thursday and Friday, we will not have math on those days. The students are looking more confident everyday with the content that we are learning!

This week in class we are continuing with Chapter 3, Computing with Multi-Digit Numbers. In this chapter we are adding and subtracting decimals, estimating products, multiplying decimals, estimating quotients, and dividing multi-digit numbers including decimals. We are focusing on finding patterns in math and how we can utilize these patterns to help us understand mathematical concepts and make them easier to compute.

How can I help my child improve above the rest:
    -review mental math skills daily
    -practice multi-digit operations at home
-make it as fun as possible!

We will have a quiz on Thursday covering multiplying decimals by whole numbers and decimals by decimals.
