This week students will continue to compose a narrative story they have already begun, chosen from their writer's notebook.  They will draft, revise, and edit their stories this week.  We will also be working on the 6 Traits of Writing and how they can revise their story before they publish it. We will look at sentence fluency, word choice, conventions, and presentation.  The final copy will be due Tuesday, January 20.

We will also be focusing this semester on grammar.  We will begin each day with Daily Oral Language and every Wednesday will be a grammar lesson. We will take a break from the vocabulary words and pick them back up in March.

On Wednesday we will have our Second Step, Study Skills day.  We will still have electives on Wednesday and the times will be the same however we will be doing lessons from the Second Step program as well as some study skills.  We decided as a Middle School team that there wasn't a good way for us to make sure that every child received the lessons during advisory since not everyone has an advisory so we created 4 special days throughout the year to meet to ensure that every child gets the lessons from each of these programs

Students should be working on their Writer's Notebooks at home.  This is a place to record thoughts, ideas, pondering, wondering, observations, etc. They need to write in it 2 times a week for 10 minutes (Period 5) or 20 minutes (Period 6) each time. The next due date is  Friday, March 13.  They should have 15 more entries for a total of 45 entries.

I will put all homework assignments on my calendar at the bottom of the page. Please check it daily. If you cannot see the calendar, have your child look at their Google calendars as I have shared my assignment calendar with them.

PARCC testing begins in March. Please see the Middle School Calendar for the dates. We will be doing practice items from the test throughout January and February.  Your child can also go to the PARCC website and take a practice test. http://parcc.pearson.com/# This year the test will be taken on computers and practicing how to take the test will be beneficial to the success of your child.

Spring middle school parent/teacher conferences will be held Wednesday, March 4th from 3-7 PM and Thursday, March 5th from 4-7 PM. Conferences will be held in rooms 166 and 167 as an open house format so you may drop in at any time during the conference time windows to talk with me.

Attention all parents! We need to hear your voice! The Accountability Committee is conducting a Parent Stakeholder Satisfaction Survey. The survey will be open to all parent stakeholders on January 6, 2015 and will continue through January 18, 2015.

The survey is an important tool for the Board of Directors to collect YOUR valuable Stakeholder feedback to evaluate our special community’s progress toward our goals.

Help your child’s class win an ice cream sundae bar party served up by the Accountability Committee members. The class with the most survey responses wins the party!

Please follow these steps when you finish the survey:

1. Print the final page (the confirmation page)

2. Write your child’s and teacher’s name on the page

3. Return it to the front desk or send it to class with your student
