This week we will be starting material from Unit 2. This unit includes mental math strategies, new vocabulary, estimation, and one/two step word problems. We will start the unit by discussing numerous mental math strategies that will help students with all addition and subtraction problems from here on out. That being said, it is very important that students are fast and confident with their addition and subtraction math facts.

In class, we will be participating in a math race! The students will each have their own race car and participate in a one minute math drill. Once the students complete their page accurately in a minute or less, they will get to move their car! When their car makes it the entire way around the race track, they will receive a prize! Here are some fun ways that your child can practice their addition/subtraction math facts at home...

*Math Fact Basketball
*Alien Addition
*Jet Ski Addition
*Tug Boat Addition
*Island Chase Subtraction

Dinner Table Talking Points

We know that kids often say they have nothing to talk about when asked about their day at school. Here are a few suggestions to help get them talking about what they learned and experienced this week. Ask your child...

1. To show you the different mental math strategies they learned.

2. To define "sum".

3. To tell you about the class math race!

4. To tell you about their PJ party they earned last week.

5. To tell you about their new homework passes!
