Happy Monday everyone! I hope all of you had a wonderful weekend.

Last week we spent the majority of our time reviewing 2A/2B material. The students really enjoyed all of the review activities and games that we played. As an extension, we worked on challenging addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division word problems. We learned many strategies on how to conquer tricky problems that will be beneficial for the students from here on out. One strategy that we focused on was using bar models. These models assist students in giving them a visual representation of the problem and equation (I have provided a very basic example below).

Today, the students received their Unit 1 pretest. As a class, the students did very well! That being said, I do not feel that we need to cover place value and numbers to 10,000 in depth like we will other chapters. I plan on reviewing the material with the students tomorrow and then moving on to Unit 2 (Addition & Subtraction). We will be following a very similar pattern throughout the year. The students will receive a pretest before each unit in order to steer me in the right path of instruction. My goal is that each student shows mastery in every unit. If students are showing mastery or scoring above an 80% on their pretest, we will do a quick review and move on.

I will be passing out our textbooks and workbooks tomorrow. This means home enjoyment will be starting this week (surprisingly the kids are really excited about this)! See below for the home enjoyment schedule. Due to concepts changing throughout the week and me monitoring their understanding, I will be checking their assignments daily. I apologize if this inconveniences anyone during their busy schedule this week. Remember, if your child is spending more than 20 minutes on their assignment, please stop them! Contact me and we can work through it together.

*Students will have their IXL log in information in their planners. :)
*MAPS testing will be held on Thursday, September 22 during our math block.

Home Enjoyment
Monday, 9/19 : None.
Tuesday, 9/20 : Review 1 (p.23-25)
Wednesday, 9/21 : IXL B.1 (15 min.)
Thursday, 9/22 : IXL B.5 (15 min)

(Home enjoyment is subject to change this week. I will be sure to update my blog if there are any changes. You will also see the correct assignments in your child's planner each day.)

Dinner Table Talking Points

We know that kids often say they have nothing to talk about when asked about their day at school. Here are a few suggestions to help get them talking about what they learned and experienced this week. Ask your child...

1. To tell you about their paper airplane activity last week.

2. To tell you how they did on their Unit 1 pretest.

3. To tell you what common words are used in an addition word problem (examples: "total", "altogether", "in all", etc.).

4. To use a bar model when working through a math problem.

5. To tell you about their class prize!
