Sergeeff's Weekly Literacy Blog! (Dec. 5 - 9)

This week we will continue reading our scripts (The Ant & The Grasshopper, The Shepherd Who Cried Wolf, The Fox & The Crow, and The Sun & The Wind). We will discuss various decoding strategies that will help us with "tricky" words. We will also discuss the purpose (or moral) behind each of Aesop's stories.

Each student has received their character. Please consider working with your child on their lines at home. This can be used as minutes on their Reading Log.

In writing, we will be working on writing narratives. We will work on creating various ways to come up with story ideas, make a quick sketch, and learn how to use our senses in order to describe objects.

The students have received their new spelling lists. Their next spelling test will not be until Wednesday, December 14th. There will be no Spelling Menu due this week. However, their Reading Log will be due this Friday, December 9th.

Dinner Table Talking Points

We know that kids often say they have nothing to talk about when asked about their day at school. Here are a few suggestions to help get them talking about what they learned and experienced this week. Ask your child...

1. To tell you what story and character they are assigned.

2. To tell you what ways they can come up with ideas to write about (ABC soup, squiggles, thumbprints, pictures from books/magazines, or poems).

3. To tell you how to use "chunking" to break apart a tricky word.

4. To tell you how they did on their spelling test.

5. To read their lines to you.
