We are starting our PARCC test today, make sure to get a good night's sleep and to eat a good breakfast with protein so your brain is ready to show off all that it knows :)

As mentioned in last week's blog, we have started a reading project for this month.  Since reading is the only activity that you can do once you have finished your test or if you are in another teacher's classroom if I'm proctoring a test, this just made sense.  As we have talked about many times in class, you need to be reading at least one book for your author (L2- Avi, L3- Lloyd Alexander) with a group, one more on your own by the same author so we can discuss his writing style/technique.  The third book is one of your choice that is grade appropriate and that you have wanted to read but haven't yet.  You need to have this independent book approved by both myself and your parents.  This was due last Friday.  If you haven't yet gotten a book approved, please do that by Wednesday of this week.

The presentation for your independent book is due March 20.  Remember that when you finish your independent book, you are creating a presentation to advertise it to us using technology that is not a power point or slide show.  We talked about Prezi.com in class as well as Animoto and powtoon.  If you finish your presentation before March 20, you can share it before the 20th for extra credit.  Your presentation should be no less than 2 minutes and no more than 4/5 minutes. Please refer to the sheet attached to my blog last week if you have questions about what to include.
Also remember that, as we discussed in class we are doing the presentation on an independent book instead of our research papers because the majority of you were ready to move onto a new topic.  However, if you really wanted to present about your research topic and you have already talked to me, your presentation will be on your research topic.  You still need to read an independent book, however your presentation will be on your research topic.

Writer's Notebook entries - need 49 by 3/8.  We will have a check after 50 entries.  If you have finished your required reading, you could be working on writing entries.

We have conferences this week Wednesday and Thursday nights.  It is an open house style.

I have book orders available for anyone who would like to order. Checks can be made out to Scholastic Book clubs or you can bring cash to me or you can order on-line by looking for my page and using the code HFH8N.

As this is our last week for this round of electives, astronomy your presentations are due this week.  Next week we start our last round of electives for this year.

Have a great week!
Happy March!
