Last week we wrapped up unit 11 which is focused on time! Students learned how to tell time to the closest minute and discuss different ways to tell time without a clock (days in a week, months, years).

This week we will be moving onto the next unit, Capacity! Students will be learning about estimating capacity, compare and contrast different containers, understand liter, cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. Feel free to have your student help you do the measuring when you are cooking at home. Also, you can do a capacity hunt in the kitchen, or around the house, for the different capacity mentioned above. I am trying to use a lot of real life connections with the students to help them visualize the different capacities. We will also be creating a measurement robot to help them visually this week in class.

Homework:

Monday- WB pages 138

Tuesday- WB pages 140

Wednesday- WB pages 142

Thursday- WB pages 147

Last week, we finished up our unit on money, and completed our unit test. I extended the unit a few more days to make sure all students understand coin amounts, and addition and subtraction of money.

This week we will start Unit 10 which focuses on fractions! Students will identify and write fractions of a whole, name fractions up to 1/12, name fractions in part of a group, compare and order unit fractions and find fractions by dividing sets into equal groups.

Please work on helping your child see fractions in their daily life and build fractions out of things at home.

Class store is this Friday!

I sent a flyer home in Monday folders this week also.

Dear Team P Parents,

To wrap up our money unit we will be holding a class store. This will give students a realistic view of spending money and adding/subtracting amounts. I am asking that students bring in an item that they can “sell” at the store.

Ideas for items include: pencils, pens, small wrapped candy, snack sized foods, coloring sheets (printed or handmade-I can copy at school if needed), fun erasers, little toys… Of course your child can get creative and make something too (paper airplanes, origami, a drawing).  Whatever they choose they will need to have around 25 items.

Our store will take place Friday, March 24th so all items have to be in no later than this date. Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Thank you for your help and support!

Mrs. Pecosky

This week we will continue/conclude Unit 9 which focuses on money. Students will be working on counting money, word problems and adding/subtracting money. Students will be taking their unit 9 assessment this Thursday!

     * Please work with your child at home with counting money, adding money together, and equivalent values. This is a great unit to pull in real life experiences so talk with your child about where you use money in your daily life. You could even have them add up prices at the grocery store or help them purchase items using dollars and coins.

Homework:

Monday- WB pages 83

Tuesday- WB pages 84

Wednesday- WB 85

Thursday- Get store items for Friday

Friday- IXL optional

We will conclude Unit 8 this week: Multiplication and Division with the assessment on Monday. This week we will start Unit 9 which focuses on money. Students will be reviewing the types of coins and bills, working on counting money, and adding money. Students will understand what each coin is worth, the characteristics of the coins, and how we can use different coins and bills to make the same equivalent value.

Please work with your child at home with counting money, adding money together, and equivalent values.
